How Much Does a Vinyl Wrap Cost?

Vinyl Wrap on vehicles has been around for longer than you might think. What started out as primarily graphics and advertising for businesses, has since become extremely popular with private individuals looking to update the current state of their car. And with all the many benefits of vinyl wrap, as well as the continued advancement of color options and finishes, it looks like vinyl wrap is here to stay.

 

The question we get most often is “How much will it cost to vinyl wrap my car?” There are many factors that go in to determining the price of a vinyl wrap: size and condition of the car, desired film, estimated time of installation, and installer expertise.

Current Vehicle Condition and Prep Work

The first step in determining the cost to vinyl wrap your car is the size and condition of your vehicle. Cars some in many sizes, all the way from compact two door coupes to extended SUVs and Trucks. After assessing the size of your vehicle, specific factors as to the condition of the car are taken into account: is there any previous film the needs to be removed? Rust? Sticky residue or excessive dirt? A car must be absolutely free from any form of residue, dirt and dust before application, so if your car is clean and smooth, you’re off to a good start.

 

Determining a Film Type

The next step is determining a film. There are numerous brands of vinyl, with some brands being better than others. There are also endless colors and finishes to choose from. Specialty films such as chromes and color shift are more expensive than more standard colors like satin black or pearl white. There is also a higher difficulty of install with many of the specialty vinyls. We prefer to use higher quality brands such as Avery and 3M. Ultimately it will cost you less in the end as the material will last longer and need little to no repair.

 

Once you decide on a vinyl, the amount you need based on the size of your vehicle is calculated.

 

Time Needed for Installation

The third determining factor is time needed to fully wrap your vehicle. Larger vehicles inevitably will take longer to wrap. However, each individual vehicle also needs to be assessed for particularly difficult areas or disassembly required to properly wrap the vehicles with as few seams as possible. Additionally, any extra areas such as door jams, added stripes, etc. also add extra time.

 

Installer Experience

And the final determining factor is the quality of the installer. You’ve heard it a million times, but the saying is particularly true in this scenario: You get what you pay for. Its extremely important to choose a quality installer with a high level of experience and expertise. You may find a company who quotes you at a lower rate, and at a faster speed, but the quality of an install is not an area to skimp on. You should be looking for a company who will be willing to take the time to do the job right. Who are more concerned about doing a good job over a fast job so they can speed through as many jobs as possible to make as much money as they can. A cheap install will likely need to be redone, costing you thousands of dollars and wasted time: bubbling, peeling, lifting, etc. We can’t stress this enough, hire a quality installer!

We had some fun wrapping this amazing 2014 Corvette C7 Stingray for Xtreme Xperience. The car started out as a black Stingray with chrome wheels. One of the most eye-catching features of the all-new C7 is the use of vents, fins and louvres around the car which give it an aggressive look, but as a black car, the dark vents just didn’t ‘pop’ on its angular body.

In order to give this already eye-catching car a more supercar-worthy design, we decided to go with an aggressive bright orange gloss vinyl wrap and matte black Plasti Dipped wheels.

Firebird Raceway East Track Map

In addition to owning and operating WrapForm, I’m the VP of Marketing and an instructor for Xtreme Xperience.  We recently got back from a trip to Firebird Raceway in Phoenix, AZ. The beautiful AZ 70-80 degree weather was a welcomed relief from the relatively mild Fall we’re experiencing in Chicago. In addition to my Xtreme Xperience duties, I put on my WrapForm hat to apply some graphics and headlights lenses to protect the cars (in part) from the dusty track. XX recently picked up a wrapped matte black Lamborghini LP560 (in the video above) which I’ll be writing a sperate post about since the wrap job is shining example of a commercial sign shop butcher job.

 

My thoughts on the track: Firebird East was a pretty straight forward track. Not too technical, not too boring. The track is 1.25 miles long with 10 turns (depending on how you count turns) and a 1/4-mile straightway. The surface is sealed, so it’s very slippery in the morning before the dust is blown off of the racing line. I actually went off-track 3 times in the Ferrari F430 while trying to learn the racing line; I just carried too much speed into the turns. After getting the line down, I was even able hang with a group of professionals who called Firebird their home track!

 

The best part of the 4-day Supercar Track Xperience was my experience driving the McLaren MP4-12C. As you can see in the video above, this car handles and accelerates like nothing else. I’ve driven the MP4-12C’s closest competition, the Ferrari 458 Italia, and while that’s an amazing car, it didn’t have the slam-your-head-back acceleration and ride-on-rails cornering of the McLaren.

Negatives: Brutally bumpy curbing, curbing drop-offs that could ruin a supercar, very dusty track, no amenities or buildings

This is video of me giving a ride-along experience to Xtreme Xperience’s newest employee, @Chrgrint. The Mercedes SLS AMG is an absolute blast to drive. It’s perfectly balanced which allows you to feel the car rotate around you through the turns. The naturally aspirated 6.2 litre V8 delivers power instantaneously and makes one of the best sounds in the automotive world (in my opinion). The transmission is amazing; in S+ mode, it almost reads your mind while in AMG mode (manual with paddles), the shifts are almost immediate and have a predictable feel. The only down side is that the steering is too good. It does not provide as much input as some of the other supercars such as a Ferrari F430. Plus, there are those doors. Those beautiful gullwing doors. Just watch your head getting out.

The Autobahn Country Club is located in Joliet, Illinois on 315 acres, just a short drive out of downtown Chicago, minutes off of Highway 55. The North Track is a 1.46 mile road course and features 9-turns, 3 straight-aways (the longest is 1237-ft) and 40-ft wide racing tarmac. The track also has a South track, LARGE paddock, a go-kart track, skid pad, clubhouse, timing towers, privately-owned garages, a snack bar (best food of any track I’ve been to), free wi-fi, and clean bathrooms.

I recently had the opportunity to drive this beautiful, brand new, F1-inspired race track as an instructor for Xtreme Xperience‘s Supercar Track Xperience. Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawesonville, GA is a gem in the midst of the rolling hills of Georgia.

 

Cars Driven at AMP: Lamborghini LP570 Spyder Performante, Lamborghini Gallardo, Audi R8, Ferrari California, Ferrai F430, Porsche 911 Turbo, Porsche 911 Turbo S. Cars I rode in: Porsche GT3 RS 4.0, Camaro SS.

 

Top Speed Reached: approx 130 mph after Turn 16 in a Lamborghini LP570 Spyder Performante.

 

The Track:

Atlanta Motorsports Park (AMP) is a road course designed by famed Formula One architects, Hermann Tilke. AMP is a 2-mile road course with elevation changes, technical course layout, high speed straights and two ‘signature’ corners designed to pay homage to famed European race courses; Belgium’s Spa-Francochamps and the iconic ‘Carousel’ from Germany’s Nurburgring. Incorporating these most famous and exciting of all of motorsports only hints at the lengths. 

 

Highlights: Beautiful scenery. The track has signs around the track which are great for indicating the turn-in, apex and track out points of the racing line. The elevation changes were a welcomed feature, but getting used to blind turns over hill crests was a challenge. It’s a highly engineered track. The built-in braking compression zones were a lot of fun. Finding the racing line is tough, but very rewarding when you hit a set of turns just right. The track has a great rhythm. The track staff was very friendly, helpful and attentive.

 

Negatives: The place was still under construction so the paddock was granite gravel which resulting in shiny dust infiltrating every possible crack, seam, and surface or our cars, clothes and equipment. There’s a hump in Turn 11 that bottoms out the cars which resulted in some decent wear on the underbodies of the cars. It’s a tough track to teach a complete novice; especially in supercars.
